McGillin’s Olde Ale House, which has been around since 1860, was named one of the country’s “coolest bars” in the October 2008 issue of Gourmet. It was cited for its “old-time character” and “lively, sometimes raucous” atmosphere.
“Coolest” seems like a misnomer — at least initially. Sure, McGillin’s has got a long history behind it, but when was the last time you heard anyone suggest it as hip place to go for a night out? Then again, the word of Gourmet carries a lot of weight, and we tend to rethink our stance on things when they recommend something. Plus, the fact is that 1860 was a long, long time ago, and it is cool that McGillin’s has been around for nearly 150 years. (It’s older than the Phillies!)
This all seems like reason enough to go have an after work drink at McGillin’s… and then we found out that it happens to be “Phillies-mania” at McGillin’s during play-off games. There will be decorations, all of those local beers that are besting Milwaukee’s, as well as a “Phillie-tini,” if you’d really rather have raspberry vodka, triple sec, and cranberry Juice (in a glass rimmed with red sugar) than beer.
At the very least, going to a bar where you know people sat and watched the 1980 World Series is pretty neat.
