Happy World Vegetarian Day!

Honey crisp apples and luscious grapes are in season and available at the Green City Market — a perfect place for vegetarians to shop.

Hey there, plant haters! Tammy from Chicago Bites, knowing we are the sort of unrepentant carnivore who might not have noticed this sort of thing, sent us a message this morning:

Celebrate World Vegetarian Day!

Sponsored by the North American Vegetarian Society, World Vegetarian Day kicks off a month-long effort to raise awareness of vegetarian dining options and get the word out about the many positives of a vegetable-based diet.

If you’re new to vegetarian dining options in Chicago and don’t know how to get started, the Green City Market is an excellent place to browse the many fruits and vegetables in season. It’s also a great spot to get advice on how to prepare veggies from the people who grow them. Drop by today!

If you’re less DIY-minded (preparing food? yourself?! quelle horreur!), there are myriad options for vegetarian dining: From newcomers like Mana Food Bar, where small plates are the order of the day, to vegetarian epicures like Green Zebra, to the old-school seitan-worshippers: Chicago Diner and Karyn’s, there’s no dearth of options.

Don’t be intimidated by unusual vegetables like red curry squash — they may become a new favorite.
