A Rooftop Farm in Little Italy; Platt Unimpressed With Allegretti

In the magazine this week, Wendy Goodman tours an “urban farm” on a Little Italy rooftop with chickens, an herb garden, and (until recently) a beehive. But if you prefer to eat out rather than grow your own food, note that Adam Platt was unimpressed with Allegretti, giving it only one star. It’s expensive, has “Westchester-style décor,” and the cooking is good only “in a dated Continental way.” Back to our own kitchen, then, for escarole. Jimmy Carbone of Jimmy’s No. 43 shared his recipe for wilted escarole and slab bacon with Rob and Robin for this week’s In Season dish. But these belt-tightening times don’t ruin all of our gastronomical fun: Rob and Robin tell us that Sapori d’Ischia still charges $50 for its three-course Tuesday-night truffle dinners. Treat yourself.
