The New Bar at ‘21’: Still Brassy, and Now Green Too!

The reopened ’21’ boasts a sleek new bar, according to City Room. So where did the wider, longer original go? To the same place where P.J. Clarke’s urinals went when that bar remodeled. Evan Blum of Demolition Depot says the old bar can be yours for just $50,000! (Sorry, guy, we’re saving up to buy an Astroland ride.) Meanwhile, a mind-blowing detail about the new bar proves that the more things change, the more they stay the same: Like the old one, it has a hidden chute for disposing of liquor bottles, except instead of sweeping the bottles toward the sewer system like in the days of Prohibition, it dumps them into a recycling bin. “This way,” says GM Bryan McGuire, “We’re keeping our heritage and also being green-conscious.” Question: So when Chumley’s reopens, will its trapdoor open onto a compost pile?
