Restaurant Responds to Outrage Over Its $1.75 Slice

After airing a reader’s grievance that the afternoon slice special at Naples 45 had gone up from $1.25 to $1.75 (“the ‘magic’ is definitely gone,” lamented the reader), Midtown Lunch hears back from the “saddened” restaurant:

The price of flour has gone up four times over the past 12 months, and the dollar is at a record low against the Euro — which means that the Italian ingredients that we import to make our authentic Neopolitan pizza (San Marzano tomatoes, Italian low-gluten wheat flour) have gone up multifold.

Of course, the rising price of cheap grub was well documented in our Cheap Eats issue: At least the slice hasn’t gone up from $3 to $4, like at Di Fara.
