Ain’t Life Grand

Bostonians seem to have an obsession with drinking outdoors. Maybe it’s because for a good portion of the year, we wear sweatpants and dig our cars out of the snow at 6 in the morning before work. But during these steamy summer months when we can forget about fighting with the thermostat, it seems like most Bostonians are searching for a place to drink under the open sky.

We came upon Grand Canal, a bar along (of course) Canal Street, for a friend’s birthday party, and found it to be a great spot that’s hidden behind all the loud, tequila shot-swilling sports bars in the area. An upscale Irish pub, the best feature of Grand Canal is its expansive patio area that most Boston-area bar owners would kill for. Instead of that uncomfortable, standing room only type of pick-up joint you’re thinking of, bunches of tables and chairs are set along the patio so you and your friends can hang out as if it was your own roof deck. Buckets of beer and a beautiful view of the North End make the Grand Canal a fun and laid back atmosphere. During these few months when it’s actually warm enough to eat and drink outside, let’s take advantage of these grand opportunities. Pun intended.
