The Grand Italian Food Center, at 186 Grand Street, has been shuttered by the Department of Health. Last month, an inspection resulted in 71 out of 175 violation points, owing to evidence of mice and insects, as well as improper methods of garbage storage, personal cleanliness, and contamination prevention. Other than its brick-oven pizza, its massive menu of heros, and the fact that it has been open for over fifty years, the place is fairly unremarkable — the tragedy here is that its wooden benches are temporarily off-limits. Where will Little Italy’s tourists catch a breather?
