Don’t Hold The Anchovies

We didn’t know that we loved anchovies so much until ’Witchcraft told us so.

Tom Colicchio’s sandwich chain may no longer be the new kid on the 5th and Mission block, but we’re not sure how many people know about the hidden gem that is the Marinated White Anchovy sandwich. In no way did this sandwich sound appealing when we first approached the counter looking for something refreshing like tuna salad, so when the smiley gal at the register recommended we give it a try we turned up our nose in protest. It’s still not clear how we were persuaded to place the final order (perhaps we’d been reading too much of local chef Brett Emerson’s blog), but let’s just say it’s one of the best decisions we’ve made in a while.

We’re pretty sure the secret is the marinade. The tangy zip replaces the fishiness often associated with anchovies. But the soft-cooked egg, roasted onion and frisée also give the sandwich some substance and help to push the idea of downing salty, silver, little things father back in your mind, allowing you to let go of any fish prejudice and savor the sandwich.

So yeah, forget what you know about anchovies. Head to ‘Wichcraft, order the marinated white anchovy sandwich, accompany with your free bag of potato chips and enjoy.
