Earlier this week, we brought news that one of our favorite spots, No Malice Palace, is temporarily closed for what owner Phil Sherman told us was some sprucing up. And now — the rest of the story! It turns out the Palace’s liquor license expired on January 31. Sherman tells us he applied for a renewal as usual, but this year the community board decided to enforce a law that allows it to require a bar or restaurant to inform them 30 days before an application is filed. For what it’s worth, Sherman also says the SLA and his lawyer have assured him that a renewal will be granted, and he’s still hoping to open this weekend or, at the latest, on February 17. On Monday, he’ll have to go before the board to address complaints about his backyard. We assume he’ll have a harder time than Momofuku Ko — which is stating its case for a license during that same meeting — but in any case we wish him luck.
