Best Of MenuPages Reviews: Reviews That Reference Other MenuPages Reviews

We may not do reviews at MenuPages, but our legions of users are all over that. Here are four of interest.

Not to get all meta on you, but we appreciate it when MenuPages reviews reference other MenuPages reviews. Anything that fosters a dialogue, real or imagined, is okay in our book. Now, sometimes, the reference takes the form of “that last reviewer is a stupid piece of [REDACTED] who wouldn’t know his [REDACTED] from his [REDACTED].” Or, in the case of a review that Gawker picked up about a restaurant in Park Slope, Brooklyn, we got the following reaction:

This is a good diner. A diner that you can depend on. [REDACTED] on the other hand can’t be depended on. He has severe performance issues and cries before, during and after sex. It’s creepy.

Oh yeah, that’s mature. But a lot of the reviews that reference other reviews do so in a helpful manner, supporting or contradicting a point made earlier in a way that gives a more balanced picture of the restaurant than if everyone were simply pissing in the wind. We found these four from the past week, and we’re presenting them in chronological order:

Silver Seafood Restaurant, by “PaulW” on 10/30:

Silver Seafood definitely holds its own against the Chinatown establishments, both in terms of value and quality. The seafood is treated with a light hand, and is consistently fresh. As others have pointed out, the steamed fish with ginger and scallions is very good. Salt and pepper smelts (or crab) are delicious, far more complex than their names suggest. The wonderfully aromatic pea shoots with garlic are a nice alternative to the more typical veg dishes. Crispy skinned chicken with spiced salt is flash fried at extremely high temperature so the end result is not at all greasy. This place is definitely worth checking out. The service is consistently efficient and courteous as long as you don’t expect the busy waitstaff to be your pals.

I agree with Danny D that the atmosphere is nothing special, but am quite certain that it’s not only Asians who celebrate birthdays or other occasions at the weekends.

Also, the staff probably DO mind two year-olds throwing rice on the floor but are most likely too polite to show it. Hopefully we won’t learn from Mark’s review to equate ‘family friendly’ with ‘personal playground’.

We think children under 5 should be banned from all but specially designated restaurants. Or at least from dining past 9pm. Something!

Pompei, by “Concierge” on 10/30:

First thing, first: CALL IN YOUR ORDER AHEAD OF TIME! There is always a huge line no matter what time of day you come in. I have never stood in line here.

I have mostly been impressed with the food at Pompei. Most of the portions are good, flavors tasty, and relatively compitent service. Specifically, I think the pizza is a great value. There are plenty of varieties and the single portion should fill you up, no problem. TIP: Ask for a side of their marinara sauce for dipping. Yummy!

“Concierge” responds to a reviewer who noted that the line at Pompei is generally very long by giving advice to circumvent that annoyance. Bravo!

Hema’s Kitchen, by “Anonymous” on 10/31:

Hema’s is great. It’s one of my absolute favorite restaurants. I frequently order delivery and I’ve been to the restaurant on several occasions, too. The food is superb! The hot dishes (like the vindaloo) are REALLY hot, but have so much flavor – not just heat. My favorite dishes are the Keema Samosa (excellent flaky crusty, spicy lamb inside), Dal Palak (hands down the best and most unique dal I’ve ever had), Lamb Vindaloo, and Chana Murg. Give it a try, you won’t be disappointed!

Not sure what the reviewer meant who said the food is bland and portions are small. The food is very well seasoned. The portions are plenty for me, and I’m a hearty eater.

The service in the restaurant is adequate, but not outstanding by any means. Delivery is usually pretty fast.

“Anonymous” is trying to set the record straight by countering a previous reviewer’s slander of the food quality and portion size. Or maybe it’s a shill. But by calling the service merely adequate, “Anonymous” makes him or herself much more believable.
