The Italian Market Gets Its Plaque

Apparently, it’s not the Italian Market anymore. The new, official name as per Vince Fumo’s directions is the “South 9th Street Curb Market.” Except Fumo celebrated a bit too hard before the ceremony:

Vince Fumo says he “pushed it a little too hard” Thursday night at his Fairmount mansion, where he held a $5,000-a-head fundraiser for his re-election campaign. The embattled state senator is recuperating after back surgery Tuesday at Pennsylvania Hospital. On Friday morning he made it to the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission’s plaque at the Italian Market, or as it says on the marker, the “South 9th Street Curb Market,” because when the hundred-year-old open-air market began, it represented a number of immigrant cultures. Local author/historian Celeste Morello was behind efforts to commemorate the market with a historical marker.

Maybe a roast pork from George’s would make him feel better.
