Best Of MenuPages Reviews: Southwest Side!

We may not do reviews at MenuPages, but our legions of users are all over that. Here are four of interest.

The Southwest Side, as we defined it, doesn’t get much love. Here’s a drop in the bucket, in chronological order. By the way, we’re sorry that only one of these is outside of Pilsen/Lawndale. Too bad Beverly doesn’t count!

On 10/9, “Anonymous” wrote about the Taqueria Los Comales on 26th and Troy:

I take my students every year to Los Comales to practice their Spanish and eat authentic food. We’re never disappointed!

A teacher! Contextual language lessons! Authentic food! Well, two out of three.

The same day, “Anonymous” (probably not the same one) had this to say about Ken Tone’s Drive-In:

No fancy food here, but plenty of standards. Good lunch place when you don’t feel like grilling your own burgers or when the fridge is empty. A favorite place for breakfast on-the-go. Call ahead to place your order so you don’t have to wait long once you get there. Clientele are beat cops, local residents and construction/trades people working in the area. Good value for money.

We love A’s forthrightness with this review. “[W]hen you don’t feel like grilling your own burgers” is a classic line. Also, any review that mentions beat cops gets an automatic thumbs up (unless it’s like, “I want to beat cops into a bloody pulp.” That sentiment really has no business in a restaurant review). Enough so that we forgive the is/are issue after clientele.

The next day, “Tony” visited Positano’s Pizza:

I was flying out of Midway and stopped at Positano’s for some pizza. Some friends of mine recommended the food there. I ordered the stuffed pizza and must say its one of the best I’ve ever tasted. If you’re in the area make sure to stop by.

Whoa, is this a shill? It’s the only review for Positano’s, the English is clipped but acceptable, and “Tony” is a little obvious. But…the IP belongs to a network in Northern California. Any shiller who’s that sophisticated deserves his or her review to be validated (jk!).

On 10/12, “Anonymous” dug his or her talons into May St. Cafe:

I went to the May St. Cafe after seeing excellent reviews on Check Please. Although we didn’t have reservations at 5:30 on a Saturday we were seated albeit with a little hesitation. The waitress was friendly and informative. However, the food was expensive and not worth the price. For instance, we had the Lechon and it was nearly twenty dollars for a plate of food that I could have purchased in a restaurant in Humboldt Park for half the price and would have tasted a lot better. The pear brie quesadillas were really good but I can’t really go back to a restaurant based on one delicious appetizer. Finally, although the restaurant is located in Pilsen, not one person in the restaurant looked like they lived in the neighborhood. They were mostly middle to upper class individuals who appeared to have little knowledge about good Latino cuisine.
