The Globe is reporting that Newton Alderman Victoria Danberg is planning to propose a trans fat ban. Trans fat bans, as you may have noticed, are so hot right now. Newton’s neighbor, Brookline, banned the dastardly oils in June, and the Massachusetts legislature recently held hearings on a statewide ban.
Although it certainly seems likely to us that a statewide ban on trans fats (and, indeed, nationwide action on the matter) is imminent, Danberg seems to think otherwise. In an email she sent to colleagues asking for support, she speculated that “it will probably be quite some time until anything is passed” statewide. Danberg also took pains to clarify what, exactly, the parameters of a trans fat ban would be: since foods packaged outside Newton city limits would be exempt, residents could still “indulge in Twinkies.” We say thank god to that! We’re all for healthy initiatives, but if they come for our Hostess products, they’ve gone much too far.
