Oh Heavens: Introducing The Enomatic, A Self-Serve Wine Dispenser

San Mateo is a nice city. We’ve always liked it there. It’s a sunny, suburban oasis of sorts, away from the bustle of the city, yet big enough to warrant being the namesake for an entire county.

And San Mateo even has a handful of quality restaurants, but there might be a new reason to spend an evening on San Mateo Drive: the Enomatic at 750ml Wine Bar. The Enomatic is a self-serve wine dispenser that allows the oenophile to pour him/herself a glass of any red wine in the bar:

You insert a prepaid card, place your glass under a spout and press a button. The Enomatic supplies a 1-ounce taste at a tenth of the price of the bottle retail – from $1.20 to $6.80 – and the selection of 24 wines rotates every week or so. Visitors to the wine bar often try several tastes from the Enomatic, then order a glass or bottle of their favorite. The Enomatic serves reds only, so if you want whites or Champagne, or full glasses, order at the counter. Owner Brian Snelling is happy to expound on the wines in the Enomatic or those for sale in the front of the store. He’ll even offer good recommendations for dinner after appetizers and wine tasting.
