Ask MenuPages: Dinner Near South Street?

Ask MenuPages is an irregularly-featured feature dedicated to answering readers’ Philadelphia food questions. If you have a question regarding Philadelphia’s dining scene or restaurants, contact us at philly_editor@menupages.com (and let us know if we can use your name or not). As long as its a question we’re able to answer online, We’ll be glad to offer our knowledgable assistance. After all, we’re the ones sitting here working with menus all day.

Dear Menupages,

I want to take my boyfriend out somewhere nice next time I’m in Philly. He works until 9:00 on South Street, so it needs to be somewhere in Center City or South Philly that’s open fairly late. I’d like to go somewhere with great food, but not outlandishly expensive (it would be great if entrees were in the $15-20 range) and not so fancy that we’d need to get dressed up. Where do you suggest?

After the jump, a whole world of South Street-centric dining.

Although South Street is known for restaurants that lean towards the drunken pizza and cheesesteak imbibing crowd, there are some nicer (and affordable) options out there. We’re fans of Zot, the new Belgian restaurant at Front & Lombard. Horizons does a great job of high-end vegan cuisine (that carnivores will love too), with most entrees in the under $20 range. For cheaper options, we’re fans of the criminally underrated South Street Souvlaki (home of some of Philadelphia’s best Greek food) and of the nearby Mexican spot Molcajete Mixto in Bella Vista, all of which are open past 9pm.
