Restaurant Vets Take Refuge in Chill New East Side Eatery

When Nish went under earlier this week, partner Joe Scalice didn’t have to look far for his next home: He simply walked two blocks over and took up residence as general manager at Solace, a one-week-old “American seasonal” restaurant created by David Regueiro of Aureole, Metrazur, and most recently the Water Club. (Given what Salice just went through at the late Nish, and Regueiro’s years under famously demanding taskmasters like Charlie Palmer and Michael “Buzzy” O’Keefe, Solace would seem to be just what the two men are seeking.) “We wanted to create a space where people would feel comfortable, with food they could understand,” the chef says. We can certainly see standards like salt cod and gnocchi ragout, butter braised lobster, and eggplant, goat cheese, and tomato terrine hitting the spot on a quiet night in the garden (open till 11 p.m.), with our own bottle in tow (Solace is still waiting on its liquor license). A Double Blow for Wayne Nish: First Varietal, Now Nish Closes

This will have to go down as one of the worst months a major New York chef ever had: First Wayne Nish’s revamped menu at Varietal was unable to keep the place from shutting down its kitchen operations; now comes word that Nish’s long-running flagship, Nish (formerly March), has given up the ghost. A forwarded e-mail from the restaurant’s former wine director, Joe Scalice, says it all: “After so many years we have shuttered the doors of 405 East 58th Street; NISH (formerly March) is closed.” Scalice is now the GM at Solace, a new Italian restaurant in a refurbished townhouse at 406 East 64th Street. Ramsay's London Bar to Modernize As Maze

Though visitors to London often find Gordon Ramsay’s namesake restaurant there to be as much of a snooze as the one here, they frequently rave about the edgy cooking done at Maze, Ramsay’s modernist outpost helmed by El Bulli alumni Jason Atherton in Grosvenor Square. Given that Ramsay’s London Bar here in New York is even less talked about than Gordon Ramsay at the London, it makes sense, then, that the the former will soon be rebranded as Maze, and fitted out with a much more modern menu. Or so a source with access to Ramsay inner circles tells us. Ramsay’s PR people deny that anything is in the works, and it’s not clear whether Atherton or Gordon Ramsay NYC executive chef Josh Emett will be running the kitchen, but expect to see more Maze-like dishes, which look far more exciting, at least from its Website menus. If that’s the kind of thing that’s coming to New York, a buzz spike will be as sure as it is deserved.

Wood Ovens, and Eventually Dinner Service, Coming to Café St. Bart’s

Beautiful, one-of-a-kind spaces rarely serve good food, for the simple reason that they don’t have to. But in bringing in former Savoy and Porcupine chef Matt Weingarten, the new owners of Café St. Bart’s have put in more effort than anyone had a right to expect. The place is already doing boffo business with its lunch menu, which consists of typically simple but potent Weingarten dishes like linguine and clams with pancetta lardons, summer savory, and wild ramps; pan-braised hake in a spring herb nage; and his signature grilled-lamb-and-prune-hyssop-butter sandwich.
