SNL Finally Explains Popeyes to White People

There were a lot of highlights from this week’s episode of Saturday Night Live, which featured former One Direction member Harry Styles as both the host and musical guest, playing a dog turned boyfriend and a drug dealer goon, among other roles.

But for anyone who’s been closely following the Popeyes chicken-sandwich phenomenon, one particular sketch stood out. It features Styles as a British intern who’s determined to go to a Popeyes … on Frederick Douglass Boulevard … in the middle of the lunch rush … so he can cut the line and grab 15 sandwiches. This despite the warnings of his black coworkers, played by Kenan Thompson and Ego Nwodim, and a janitor played by Chris Redd.

Though it’s unclear if the three wrote the sketch together, it definitely has echoes of their excellent Mid-Day News sketch from early October, where news anchors turn crime reports into a racially charged competition.

Meanwhile, Sara Lee spent the weekend dealing with a flood of comments on its posts reading “wreck me daddy” and “destroy me king” after Styles played a rogue Sara Lee social-media manager in a sketch. Cast member (and erstwhile Vulture contributor) Bowen Yang accused the brand of deleting these risqué tweets, but Sara Lee execs insisted in a statement to the Advocate that they simply hid the comments because they had no idea what to do with them and have now made them public again.
