Kroger, the Ohio-based grocery-store chain with nearly 2,800 stores, has issued a small request to all of its current and future customers: Please, don’t bring your guns into the store.

The edict came just a few hours after Walmart made the same request and announced that it will no longer carry certain ammunition. The New York Post reports that Kroger exec Jessica Adelman issued a statement yesterday “respectfully asking that customers no longer openly carry firearms into our stores, other than authorized law enforcement officers.”

Adelman also made it clear that the decision is at least somewhat political, adding, “We are also joining those encouraging our elected leaders to pass laws that will strengthen background checks and remove weapons from those who have been found to pose a risk for violence.”
