Notorious toast-defiler Vegemite has marked summer’s arrival in the southern hemisphere with a highly polarizing recipe, even for Australians — who, let’s be clear, while great people, still happily eat lots of terrible foods:
“Brace yourselves Australia … it’s time for VEGEMITE Icy Poles!” the company’s official account tweeted, ironically hashtagging the warning with “#Chilled.” This was followed a couple of hours later by a link to a real recipe:
First of all, “Time for icy poles” sounds like what you maniacally cackle after burying your friend’s ski gear in the snow overnight. And icy poles made of Vegemite? It’s easy to understand why Aussies are terrified. Granted, Vegemite’s creation has its fair share of insane defenders, but mostly people are suspicious of the idea of savory yeast globs frozen to Popsicle sticks, even as Australia faces a continentwide heatwave.
