Charles Manson’s death has created all kinds of questionable responses, but none have been quite like that of the infamous pot-stirrer Voodoo Doughnut. Portland’s top pastry destination commemorated the mass murderer’s death by making him into a doughnut, in keeping with the shop’s history of commemorating figures such as Prince and Roald Dahl.
Voodoo tweeted a pic on Monday night of the edible tribute — Manson’s face made from icing, above the words “Charles Manson 1934–2017.”
The surprising thing just might be how much work must have gone into this. The eyes definitely capture Manson’s signature lunatic look, and Voodoo even included the conspicuous, infamous self-inflicted forehead tattoo, though the doughnut’s creator opted to interpret it as a simple “X.” Everyone still appears to have hated this, though:
In response to the backlash, Voodoo removed the original tweet, but then re-posted the photo with a clarification, saying, “Not celebrating. Villains die too.” The re-post apparently fared little better, and at that point the chain just gave up and deleted the tweet permanently.
