While Danny Bowien has earned fame, recognition, and a Mind of a Chef spotlight for creating Mission Chinese Food, in recent years, the restaurant has become more closely aligned with the work of executive chef Angela Dimayuga. She earned a James Beard nomination for Rising Star Chef, talked openly about mental health and improving the culture of kitchens, and retooled the menu to include celebrated dishes like Josefina’s chicken, based off of her Filipina grandmother’s recipe. Oh, and she also found time to stand up to Ivanka Trump.
After six years of working with Bowien, Dimayuga has decided to leave the company — right as it expands to Bushwick. There seems to be no bad blood; it’s simply time for Dimayuga to move on to pursue her own independent projects. Here, she explains:
