Theater of Life, a Documentary About Massimo Bottura’s Soup-Kitchen Project, Is Now on Netflix

Massimo Bottura is back on Netflix. This time, the Italian chef is the star of a documentary, Theater of Life, that follows him as he got his Refettorio Ambrosiano soup-kitchen project in Milan started. Now, the film, which received awards at the San Sebastián International Film Festival and the Planet in Focus Film Festival, is available to watch on Netflix.

Created during the run up to the Milan Expo in 2015, Bottura’s soup kitchen is unique in that it uses food waste to prepare high-end meals. The chef also involved many of his food friends — and stars of the fine-dining world — including René Redzepi, Daniel Humm, Alain Ducasse, and Virgilio Martínez. Bottura subsequently would create a nonprofit called Food for Soul, which is run by his wife, Lara Gilmore. Through the organization, the couple raises awareness about hunger and food waste, and has opened soup kitchens like Refettorio Ambrosiano in Rio de Janeiro, London, and soon the United States.
