Taco Bell’s Latest Marketing Gimmick Means Free Tacos for You

Thanks to Golden State’s utter dominance in the NBA Finals, today is Free Taco Day at Taco Bell. However, it’s got nothing to do with last night’s championship win (the Bell admits it was not-so-secretly rooting for “taco fans everywhere”), but rather something far less monumental — the fact that the Warriors won Game 3 against the Cavs on the road. This activated the chain’s “Steal a Game, Steal a Taco” deal, meaning free Doritos Locos Tacos for all of America. Participating Taco Bell locations will distribute one per person from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. today, or until supplies run out.

The DLT has been an almost inconceivably huge hit for Taco Bell. Over a billion have been sold by this point, and this NBA Finals gimmick, even as a giveaway, will help move a few million more, since no customer has the willpower to eat just one of those things. Staff at the nation’s Taco Bells are probably already getting themselves into the right headspace, and it sounds like they’re prepared to crack some skulls if necessary, too. According to the official rules, “Participating Taco Bell restaurant managers reserve the right to deny Free Taco to any person they reasonably believe has already received a Taco or has engaged in any other fraudulent activity.” Be careful out there this afternoon.
