A butcher at the West Village’s popular, long-standing Ottomanelli & Sons Meat Market was arrested on hate-crime charges on Wednesday. In April, Joe Ottomanelli was accused of giving a black deliveryman a yellow-roped noose, the New York Daily News reported, and telling him, “If you ever have any stress, just put it around your neck and pull it. I could even help you with it.” The deliveryman, who filed a report at Greenwich Village’s Sixth Precinct, alleges that this wasn’t the first time Ottomanelli made such remarks. When news of the incident first broke, Ottomanelli tried to play it off as tomfoolery, saying that he didn’t think the deliveryman would take it seriously because — he pointed out — the store has other black delivery men.
