In the wake of the East Village gas explosion, 18-year-old Pommes Frites closed down, and owners Suzanne Levinson and Omer Shorshi have been working tirelessly for more than a year to reopen the beloved French fry shop. At last, the new location, at 128 Macdougal Street, will begin serving fries today, along with the signature 30 special sauces. As the Times explains, this is an emotional moment for Levinson: “I don’t want it to be an opening with fireworks and fanfare,” she said. “We are insignificant compared to the impact this had, compared to what happened to the families and loved ones. We’re French fries.”
