Bad Decisions

A Farming Cartoonist Was Fired for Joking About Big Agriculture

Farm News publisher Larry Bushman and editor Larry Kershner declined to comment, calling it an editorial decision, but Friday stands by his cartoon, wherein he claimed the CEOs of Dupont, John Deere, and Monsanto made more money than 2,129 Iowa farmers combined. According to Morningstar data, the Des Moines Register writes, the CEOs at those companies earned $52.9 million last year. Despite getting the short shrift, Friday seems cool with it, writing that he hopes the incident “will shine light on how fragile our rights to free speech and free press really are” for his children and grandchildren.
