General Mills tried to argue that it’s a Minnesota company, and Prince was a Minnesota man, so it was totally authentic. Cheerios wasn’t the only food brand (not to mention NASA and other brands) to bring the Purple Rain, though it’s seemed to have gotten most of the hate. Four Loko, which actually still exists for some reason, tweeted an image of someone pouring out a purple one against a purple backdrop; local company Caribou Coffee tweeted out a purple banner; and Maker’s Mark tweeted out an image of its whiskey with its bottles’ normally red wax seals colored purple. What all of this has to do with Prince remains unclear. The only possibly appropriate brand tweet would be from a pancake-mix company, obviously.
