A customer who visited a popular Iowa burger joint this week left a receipt so dumb and judge-y it could function as a modern-day children’s parable. Taelor Beeck, a waitress with a pretty singular sense of style who works at Des Moines’s popular Zombie Burger, got one of those clever “tips” that was life advice instead of real money, and hers informed her: “Tips are only for normal looking people.”
Beeck tells local news channel WHO she’s unapologetic about her “weirdo” looks, which on-camera included nothing stranger than pastel hair, dangly earrings, and a nose piercing, but she adds that’s a funny reason to not help her make a living. “I almost felt like I was back in middle school all over again, like being bullied,” she says. “I felt like a burning anger inside of me.”
Employees say Beeck is actually one of the most popular servers, making it even likelier that she got screwed over for no reason but her looks. Zombie Burger released a statement saying the restaurant is “a place that celebrates individuality,” and the staff’s freedom to be themselves is “a large part of what makes that environment special.” What it didn’t add, but probably should have, is that this customer was eating at a famously gonzo sandwich purveyor that’s done up in “post-apocalyptic chic” décor, and, well, here’s what passes for “normal” around there:
