Subway has been trying to distract customers from Fogle ever since his mess wrapped up in court. It’s a tad unconventional, but a promotion that can’t but call immediate attention to inflated prices is technically a way of doing this. The response, all in all, has been unqualified outrage, and @Subway’s had a busy morning tweeting out a quasi-explanation that reads, “We launched the $5 footlong in 2007. Since then our costs have gone up greatly, but we try to balance that with promotions.” Regardless, people are still pretty angry:

Even ignoring the fury over the $1 upcharge, it’s safe to say this promotion has basically gone over like a ton of bricks:
