Essex Street’s Vic’s Pizza, which has dutifully sold slices for over four decades, will close forever tonight. Vic’s follows the lead of its neighbor Flowers Cafe, which closed in September. No surprise here, sadly enough: The current owner is converting the building into a luxury housing complex.

Owner Victor Mendez says that he’s unable to relocate because of escalating rents on the Lower East Side. “I’m just going to shut it down. I’m going to forget it, go to work, find whatever I can find, and that’ll be the end of it,” he told amNY.
