There will be no white tablecloths at the restaurant replacing Theater District institution Cafe Edison, but there will be lox. Nine months after the iconic diner got the boot, the Edison Hotel has named its successor: growing chainlet Friedman’s, gluten-free specialists and purveyors of farm-to-table, Jewish-inspired cooking. Apparently this new, hipper tenant, which plans to open in spring 2016, is meant to rejuvenate dining at the hotel, though the food itself doesn’t sound all that different. As the broker that negotiated the deal explained: “This is going to be everything the Edison Cafe was — just a few decades later.” Which will likely only make people ask once again why they bothered replacing a spot with so much history at all.
