Apparently, everything your ancestors fought for was nothing: The United States is now a place where fast-food chain Burger King’s “chicken fries” are popular enough to warrant a spicy spinoff menu item all their own. Dubbed Fiery Chicken Fries, these crispy poultry sticks are seasoned with black pepper and cayenne, which is like the Kia Sorento of hot peppers. Nevertheless, a BK executive says, perhaps a little too accurately, “The idea is that it’s so spicy it might actually offend you.”

Currently, Burger King plans to sell the item for a month at the very least, but if they’re successful, which doesn’t sound all that unreasonable, who knows what could happen. Perhaps Burger King will ride the spice wave and unleash a slew of not-really-all-that-different spinoff items in its pursuit of relevance with the apparently chili-obsessed millennials and — because it’s never too early to start thinking about them — Gen Z.
