Get Ready for Chips That Taste Like Gyros, Biscuits, and Truffles

These seem oddly promising.

Last year, America was thisclose to becoming a place where cappuccino potato chips were very real, all thanks to Frito-Lay’s “Do Us a Flavor” contest, wherein the chip giant asks the public to dream up all sorts of new flavors to become part of the regular lineup. It’s fraught with potential peril (see: the aforesaid coffee chips), yet somehow this year, Lay’s has found flavor auteurs whose chips sound pretty good. America’s four 2015 finalists are Kettle-Cooked Greektown Gyro, Wavy West Coast Truffle Fries, Southern Biscuits and Gravy, and New York Reuben — all flavors that Grub is surprised weren’t already thought up by the in-house R&D; team.

With the contest’s theme being regional this year (“Tastes of America”), there were rumors that one of the finalists was Lobster Roll, but Lay’s apparently decided to hold off, perhaps fearing that any crustacean flavor they offered would pale in comparison to Utz’s superlative “crab chips”). Anyway, online voting begins July 27, and the four flavors are supposedly already out in the wild for you to try.
