California’s New Regulation Requires Customers to Request Water

Yesterday, the California State Water Resources Control Board announced some emergency measures to combat drought — and one stipulation will directly affect restaurants. Now servers and bartenders are forbidden from automatically bringing out water with a menu, and must instead wait for customers to ask for water.

California is in its fourth year of drought, so many see this restriction (and others, like a limit on turning on sprinklers) as necessary. But not everyone’s taking the news well:
