Less than a day after we learned that beloved Sheepshead Bay diner El Greco will be razed to accommodate a condominium complex, Brownstoner learns that plans submitted today for a six-story mixed-use building for 225 Wythe Avenue include room for stores and ten jumbo apartments. That address, of course, is home to La Esquina Brooklyn, or Café de la Esquina at Wythe Diner in the longer form, and it certainly doesn’t seem likely that any new construction would be able to shoehorn the 62-year-old railcar-style diner. There is, however, the possibility that the shiny structure — which has been featured in dozens of TV shows and movies and was once neighborhood pioneer Relish — will be picked up and moved.
