Thirteen years before his credit card was declined at East Houston Street’s trendiest restaurant, then–Illinois State Senator Barack Obama appeared on Check, Please!, Chicago’s PBS member station WTTW’s show about eating out. Someone on Reddit dug up this gem of a video, in which diplomacy abounds — “The prices are right, and the portions are good,” Obama says, after hearing a knock on the food at Dixie Kitchen. (The place closed in 2009 because of construction.) “Those johnnycakes, they’ll get you early, and you won’t have room for the peach cobbler,” the future president adds, demonstrating a knack for strategy.
