Here’s a nice coda to a sad story: Dumbo venue ReBar, which shuttered abruptly in May after owner Jason Stevens stole thousands of dollars from couples who had left deposits on weddings and for other special events, may end up saving the 44-year-old Brooklyn Heights Cinema. The movie theater will shut down at the end of the month because the property has been sold, but owner Kenn Lowy says he’s seeking to reestablish operations nearby. He’s not yet signed a lease. ReBar has been vacant since May, and last month Jason Stevens was sentenced to three to ten years in jail for tax fraud. Because the location has a full kitchen, this could mean that Brooklyn Heights Cinema 2.0 might have food and cocktails if the deal works out. [NYDN, Related]
