Former Il Buco Alimentari chef Justin Smillie teamed up with restaurateur Stephen Starr earlier this year, and the duo has since been developing plans for the sprawling Gramercy space that was last home to Manzanilla. The restaurant will open by October and will be called Upland. The name comes from the California town where Smillie was born, and the Mediterranean-style menu will include things like sprouted chickpea croquettes and lamb belly. [Eater NY, Related]
