The bustling Turkish kebab house Bereket, which served sobering doses of harsh fluorescent lighting and hot kofte kebabs to thousands and thousands of late-night diners, closed over the weekend sometime after the falafel ran out, around 1 a.m. on Sunday morning. Bereket had been in business for 19 years, more or less continuously, and the good news is that it may relocate to Allen Street. Real-estate developer Ben Shaoul recently purchased 187 East Houston Street and 196-198 Orchard Street, most likely in advance of building something tall and soulless that will replace the set of low-rise buildings. This parcel does not, thankfully, include Katz’s Delicatessen. [EV Grieve]
