Pressured by some fourth-graders upstate, the New York State Senate voted last night to make yogurt the official state snack. Stranger yet: An hourlong floor debate occurred beforehand. Opponents proposed cheesecake and kale chips. Then this exchange happened: “Did the sponsor consider pretzels?” “Never.” “What if the pretzel was dipped in yogurt? Could that be considered the state snack?” “The yogurt would be considered the snack, not the pretzel.” Besides being backed by the cute-kid lobby, the bill also has this convincing factoid: “New York is now the number one processor of yogurt in the country.” It moves to the Assembly for approval.
