A water main broke just outside Katz’s Delicatessen this morning, sending thousands of gallons of muddy water into Houston Street. The famed Lower East Side deli reportedly had, at one point, one and a half feet of floodwater in its basement, but it’s back to knishes and corned beef now: “We have some damage in the basement, but thankfully everyone is okay & the food is safe and sound,” wrote proprietor Jake Dell, just after Senator Chuck Schumer tweeted a message of concern. It’s clearly going to take more than a broken water main to take out the famous pastrami. [Mara Altman/Twitter, Daily Intelligencer]
