Gothamist gets the inside scoop from proprietor Jake Dell on how Katz's Delicatessen was able to remain open yesterday, even as a water main burst on Houston Street just outside its front door and flooded the iconic Lower East Side establishment's basement, leaving behind three feet of mud. "It looks like a war zone," Dell says. Most important, however, all the pastrami and brisket made it through unscathed, and while a lot of other product had to be tossed and a crew is working around the clock to remove the mud, Katz's remains open.
