Lulu’s Proprietor Says Landlord Won’t Let Him Reopen As Gay Bar

The $5 shot-beer-pizza combo at Lulu’s is practically city-famous, but owner John McGillion indicates that happy hour deals aside, the Greenpoint bar is “barely scraping by.” Because the neighborhood currently has but a modest gay bar scene, McGillion thinks Lulu’s would “make a considerable profit” as a gay bar. Unfortunately, and perhaps not coincidentally, the owner signed a lease in 2005 in which he literally agreed not to do that. On top of this, McGillion says he’s tried selling the business, but claims the landlord plans to triple the rent for the next tenant, so now he’s suing to have the clause struck from the lease, and also an extension.
