The 1964 World’s Fair opened 50 years ago tomorrow — April 22 — and among its many cultural contributions, it’s fondly remembered as the place where Americans first got to try crisp, delicious, deep-pocketed Belgian waffles, topped with whipped cream and hand-sliced strawberries. As one fairgoer recalls in the Times, “no Belgian waffle has ever seemed as good to me as the ones at the fair.” The biggest waffle innovation of 2014?
