Last year, Sushi Yasuda made headlines (and sparked debate) after it announced it had abolished tipping, a practice that some believe is inherently unfair, culturally biased, and even discriminatory. The old-time yakisoba-and-sushi spot Restaurant Riki in midtown has now followed suit and joined the movement. The Observer reports that menu prices have increased "by about 15 percent" as a result, all of which is part of a business decision proprietor Riki Hashizume says he's been thinking about for ten years. "Usually we don’t take tips in Japan," he says. [NYO, Related]
