Guinness Withdraws From St. Patrick’s Day Parade Over Exclusion of Gays

The beer giant yesterday became the latest St. Patrick’s Day sponsor — joining Heineken, and Sam Adams in Boston — to withdraw parade sponsorship over the ban on gay marchers. In a statement, Guinness wrote it “has a strong history of supporting diversity and being an advocate for equality for all,” adding that it had hoped the exclusionary policy would have been reversed by now. Bloomberg has dismissed boycott efforts, in the meantime, as did Rupert Murdoch this morning, asking on Twitter, “Where will this end?” Guinness’s withdrawal ensures Irish stout will flow after all at the Stonewall Inn, and basically leaves Ford Motor Company as the final holdout.
