As if Brooklyn breeders and artisanal dog biscuits weren’t scary enough, Brooklyn’s first Whole Foods also boasts a high-tech blade-sharpening station. One panicked mother says her toddler shoved his hand into the machine (when it wasn’t in use), and others are concerned that it will send knives flying into the air, à la Gangs of New York. NYCutlery’s Chris Harth, the store’s chief knife sharpener, says that it makes him sad that people are scared, and that knife sharpening “isn’t a hipster thing.” There are plenty of those things elsewhere in the store.
