The New York City Parks Department has decided to invalidate the decision made by the socialite-studded private conservancy to banish Washington Square’s hot-dog vendors. Public pressure worked: After the conservancy deemed the vendors “unsightly,” hot-dog aficionados rallied in the park for a more democratic decision process (“Don’t be a Weenie” is the best slogan ever). Parks Department spokesperson Phil Abramson announced yesterday: “We evaluated the feedback that was received, and alerted Community Board 2 of our intent to put out a new Request for Bids later this winter. Our hope is to have two hot dog vendors in place by late spring.” Success! [Earlier, Washington Square Park Blog]
