Flatiron Bar Dewey’s Closed

DNA Info reports that Dewey’s shut down back in December after its landlord refused to extend the 18-year-old sports bar and restaurant’s lease. Owner Edward Dobres, who is rebounding by opening a three-floor bar called Madison Square Tavern at 100 West 30th Street in May, says he’d been in negotiations to save Dewey’s for six months, but ultimately couldn’t strike a deal. “We are a victim of our success,” he says. “We were here when people did drugs in [Madison Square Park] and when shootings and stabbings happened all the time. We were the first beacon of civilization here.” [DNA Info]
