One week after the Daily News reported that Williamsburg restaurant owner Carl McCoy had been involved in some sort of drug bust involving shipments of methylone from China, and just a few days after McCoy characterized the “unfortunate accusations” as a misreported incident, Eater now notes not only that Gwynnett St. is temporarily closed for “unforeseen renovations,” but that chef Owen Clark has left the kitchen, along with his cooks. “The association with international drug trafficking, Federal informing, and recent financial troubles all made the restaurant unworkable for me,” he tells the blog in an e-mail, saying the circumstances were beyond his control. The restaurant has canceled its New Year’s Eve festivities, but McCoy says he hopes to reopen on December 27 with a “small bar menu” and drinks. [Eater NY, Earlier, Related]
